Abstract

Women's age at the time of first child increased in Iran in recent years, women tend to have their first child at more interval of marriage. With postponement in childbearing a new stage of childlessness is created in people's life course. Some recent demography studies have shown that women have first birth within about 4 years of their marriage and do not tend to more delay. The aim of this paper is the recognition of women's attitudes about appropriate maternal age at the time of the first birth. The other purpose of this paper is to identify the mechanisms that prevent further delay in first birth. The results shown that appropriate age for having first birth is mid-20s, and in particular 24 years. Having a child at a late age (over 30) is considered by most participant as a nonnormative event . The reasons for short postponement have two dimension of emotional and social. Emotional dimension is related to the women's emotional needs to motherhood and love –child. Social dimension which is indirectly prevented further delay, is influenced by some social control mechanisms such as infertility stigma, social disapproval along with reducing continued interaction with family.
