Abstract

The article of gender by Margot Badran, an Orientalist, has been
published in the Leiden Encyclopedia of Quran. This paper criticizes
and evaluates the mentioned article, so that studying the works of
Orientalists on religious teachings especially quranic discussions,
expose Muslims to the mindset of non-Muslim thinkers. Criticism and
evaluation of the mentioned works also pave the way for public to
know the pure Islam. In the analysis and evaluation of the Gender
article, most of the problems are related to the intellectual basis of the
writer. She cited that the differences between men and women are
derived from Muslim culture and Islam; therefore she considers no
place for biological differences in the foundation of the rules. Another
fundamental problem is that in the rules related to men and women,
the author believes in the principles of innovation and limits cases
such as ghavamyt just to the material needs of women and only during
pregnancy. This review shows the instability of the author's viewpoint,
and makes clear that most of the behavioral differences between men
and women are due to their biological differences, and different rules
for men and women have been structured accordingly.
